POWER ASSISTED SYSTEM (POWER STEERING) (DIAGNOSTICS) > STEERING Warning Light

STEERING WARNING LIGHT DOES NOT COME ON

1. POWER STEERING ASSIST ENABLED

DETECTING CONDITION:

Defective combination meter

Defective harness

TROUBLE SYMPTOM:

When the ignition switch is turned to ON (engine OFF), the steering warning light does not illuminate.

NOTE:

It is operating normally if the warning light illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to ON (engine OFF), and turns off approximately two seconds after engine start.

STEPCHECKYESNO

1.CHECK ILLUMINATION OF OTHER LIGHTS.

Turn the ignition switch to ON. (engine OFF)

Do other warning lights illuminate?

Check the combination meter.

2.CHECK LAN SYSTEM.

Perform the diagnosis for LAN system using the Subaru Select Monitor.

Is a DTC of low-speed CAN displayed?

Perform the diagnosis according to DTC.

3.CHECK COMBINATION METER.

Perform the self-diagnosis of combination meter.

Is the self diagnosis normal?

The combination meter is normal.

Check the combination meter.

2. POWER STEERING ASSIST DISABLED

DETECTING CONDITION:

Torque sensor connector has come off.

CAN communication error (Engine rpm signal not received)

TROUBLE SYMPTOM:

The steering warning light is normal but there is no power steering assist (steering feels heavy).

NOTE:

Power steering assist does not start in the following cases.

1. Assist is not started unless an ignition switch ON signal or engine speed signal is input.

2. If the torque sensor connector is disconnected, the power steering control module side torque sensor signal will be fixed at approximately 2.5 V and assist will not be started. In this case, this is not identified as a malfunction by the system.

In the following cases, the power steering assist is limited, and the steering may be felt heavy.

To prevent malfunction caused by the overheat, the Assist limitation (Overheat protection control) may be performed in the following situations. When parking the vehicle, the completely turned steering condition is continued, or steering is slowly turned to the left and right alternately several times.

In this case, the assist will return, by stopping the engine and leaving it for approx. 30 minutes for cooling. During Assist limitation (Overheat protection control), “Assist limitation” is displayed in the «EPS operation flag» of “Current Data Display & Save” on Subaru Select Monitor.

STEERING warning light does not illuminate, and DTC is not displayed, because the overheat protection control is the regular operation of system protection.

During the cooling period of overheat protection control, another DTC will be recorded, if the power steering system connector is disconnected. To avoid this, stop the engine and leave it for approx. 30 minutes for cooling, while the DTC is not displayed and Assist limitation is executed.

STEPCHECKYESNO

1.CHECK CURRENT DATA.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, display «EPS operation flag».

Is “Assist limitation” displayed?

Stop the engine and leave it for approx. 30 minutes for cooling the power steering control module. After cooling, repeat the step 1.

2.CHECK DTC.

Read the DTC of the power steering control module using Subaru Select Monitor.

Is DTC displayed?

Perform the diagnosis according to DTC.

3.CHECK CURRENT DATA.

1) Using the Subaru Select Monitor, display «Torque Sensor main» and «Torque Sensor sub».

2) Move the steering wheel to the left and right.

Do the torque sensor values change?

Check the torque sensor circuit.

4.CHECK CURRENT DATA.

1) Start the engine.

2) Using the Subaru Select Monitor, display «Engine Speed».

Is the engine speed signal the same as that in the combination meter?

Replace the power steering control module.

Check the CAN communication.
