PROCEDURE

WARNING:

Always obey the following cautions to avoid human suffering.

There is a possibility of the pretensioner deploy by mistake. Deploy the pretensioner before discarding.

Wear protective gloves, safety goggles and earplugs during operation. Wash your hands afterwards.

After deployment, the pretensioner will be extremely hot. Do not touch with bare hands. Let it cool for 40 minutes before discarding.

CAUTION:

Deploy the pretensioner in a safe flat location. Do not deploy outdoors when there is heavy rain or winds.

Do not drop or damage the pretensioner.

A large explosive noise will occur when the pretensioner is deployed. Warn persons in the area, and do not allow anyone to approach a radius of 5 m (16 ft) from the discard location.

After deploying the pretensioner, smoke may arise. Make sure to deploy in a well ventilated location with no smoke sensors.

Do not allow water to enter the deployed pretensioner.

Wrap the deployed pretensioner in a sealed vinyl bag when discarding.

If there is a condition where it is not possible to deploy the pretensioner, contact the SUBARU dealer.

1. PRETENSIONER DEPLOYMENT ON THE VEHICLE

1. Fold the backrest all the way forward, and then move the front seat all the way forward.

2. Before starting the work, turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for 20 seconds or more.

3. Remove the center pillar lower trim.

4. Disconnect connector (A) of the pretensioner.

5. Short the clip and terminal of the airbag deployment tool together.

CAUTION:

Short the airbag deployment tool terminals until just before deploying the pretensioner.

6. Connect the airbag deployment tool and test harness adapter D.

7. Connect the test harness adapter D connector and the connector of the pretensioner.

8. Make sure there is no one inside the vehicle.

9. Extend the wiring of the airbag deployment tool to its limit, and completely close all windows and rear gate.

10. Move the battery 5m (16 ft) or more from the vehicle, and affix nearby.

11. Connect the airbag deployment tool alligator clip to the battery negative (−) terminal.

12. Connect the other cable of airbag deployment tool to the battery positive (+) terminal, and deploy the pretensioner.

CAUTION:

After deployment, the pretensioner will be extremely hot. Let it cool down for at least 40 minutes in an area with no one around.

Do not allow water to enter the deployed pretensioner.

13. Perform steps 13) - 19) for model with lap seat belt pretensioners.

14. Disconnect the orange connector from the lap seat belt pretensioner.

15. Connect the airbag deployment tool and test harness adapter F.

CAUTION:

Short the airbag deployment tool terminals until just before deploying the pretensioner.

16. Connect the connector of the test harness adapter F to the lap seat belt pretensioner.

17. Make sure there is no one inside the vehicle.

18. Extend the wiring of the airbag deployment tool to its limit, and completely close all windows and rear gate.

19. Move the battery 5m (16 ft) or more from the vehicle, and affix nearby.

20. Connect the airbag deployment tool alligator clip to the battery negative (−) terminal.

21. Connect the other cable of airbag deployment tool to the battery positive (+) terminal, and deploy the pretensioner.

CAUTION:

After deployment, the pretensioner will be extremely hot. Let cool for 40 minutes or more.

Do not allow water to enter the deployed pretensioner.

22. Remove the front outer seat belt assembly.

23. Disconnect the seatbelt in a position close as possible to the retractor.

24. Cut the seatbelt in a position close as possible to the lap seat belt pretensioner.

25. Place the deployed pretensioner in a sealed vinyl bag, then discard.

2. DEPLOYMENT OF THE PRETENSIONER BY ITSELF

1. Fold the backrest all the way forward, and then move the front seat all the way forward.

2. Before starting the work, turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for 20 seconds or more.

3. Remove the center pillar lower trim.

4. Turn over the floor mat to disconnect the belt tension sensor connector.

NOTE:

On driver’s side, disconnect the connector of the lap seat belt pretensioner.

5. Remove the bolt to remove the seat belt retractor.

6. Disconnect the seatbelt in a position close as possible to the retractor.

7. Short the clip and terminal of the airbag deployment tool together.

CAUTION:

Short the airbag deployment tool terminals until just before deploying the pretensioner.

8. Connect the airbag deployment tool and test harness adapter D.

9. Connect the test harness adapter D connector and the connector of the pretensioner.

10. Attach the pretensioner to a wheel with a tire. Next, bundle three automobile wiring harnesses [with cross sections of 1.25 mm2 (0.00194 sq in) or more] and wrap twice around the pretensioner bracket and wheel.

11. Put three tires without wheels on the tire installed the pretensioner. Put on a tire with wheel on the top, and then fasten them tight with rope.

12. Move the battery at least 5 m (16 ft) from tires, and secure the nearby area.

13. Connect the airbag deployment tool alligator clip to the battery negative (−) terminal.

14. Connect the other cable of airbag deployment tool to the battery positive (+) terminal, and deploy the pretensioner.

CAUTION:

After deployment, the pretensioner will be extremely hot. Let it cool down for at least 40 minutes in an area with no one around.

Do not allow water to enter the deployed pretensioner.

15. Place the deployed pretensioner in a sealed vinyl bag, then discard.

3. DEPLOYMENT OF THE LAP SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER BY ITSELF

1. Fold the backrest all the way forward, and then move the front seat all the way forward.

2. Before starting the work, turn the ignition switch to OFF, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait for 20 seconds or more.

3. Remove the center pillar lower trim.

4. Turn over the floor mat to disconnect the connector of the lap seat belt pretensioner.

NOTE:

Disconnect the connector of the retractor pretensioner.

5. Remove the bolt to remove the seat belt retractor.

6. Cut the seatbelt in a position close as possible to the lap seat belt pretensioner.

7. Short the clip and terminal of the airbag deployment tool together.

8. Connect the airbag deployment tool and test harness adapter F.

CAUTION:

Short the airbag deployment tool terminals until just before deploying the pretensioner.

9. Connect the connector of the test harness adapter F to the lap seat belt pretensioner.

10. Attach the pretensioner to a wheel with a tire. Next, bundle three automobile wiring harnesses [with cross sections of 1.25 mm2 (0.00194 sq in) or more] and wrap twice around the pretensioner bracket and wheel.

11. Place 3 tires without wheels on top of the tire with the pretensioner attached. Place the tire with wheel on the top, and tighten securely with rope.

12. Move the battery at least 5 m (16 ft) from the vehicle, and confirm safety in the area.

13. Connect the airbag deployment tool alligator clip to the battery negative (−) terminal.

14. Connect the other cable of airbag deployment tool to the battery positive (+) terminal, and deploy the pretensioner.

CAUTION:

After deployment, the pretensioner will be extremely hot. Let it cool down for at least 40 minutes in an area with no one around.

Do not allow water to enter the deployed pretensioner.

15. Place the deployed pretensioner in a sealed vinyl bag, then discard.
