PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SERVICES > Timing Belt
1. SOHC MODEL (INSPECTION OF TIMING BELT POSITION)
1. Remove the timing belt cover (LH).
2. Set #1 cylinder piston to top dead center of compression stroke by rotating the crank pulley and check the followings.
(1) Check that the arrow (A) of camshaft pulley (LH) points vertically.
(2) Remove the sealing rubber (B) of the timing belt cover RH.
(3) Check that the arrow (C) of camshaft pulley (RH) points vertically.
3. If the position of camshaft pulley or timing belt is out of alignment, check the problem then repair or replace as necessary.
2. SOHC MODEL (OTHER INSPECTION)
1. Remove the timing belt cover (LH).
2. While cranking engine at least four rotations, check the timing belt back surface for cracks or damage. Replace the faulty timing belt with new part as needed.
3. When the side part of timing belt (arrow direction shown in the figure) is abnormally worn (fluff or jumping out of core) or damaged, check the idlers, tensioner, water pump pulley and cam sprocket to determine idler alignment (squareness). Replace the worn or damaged timing belt with new part.
4. Install the timing belt cover (LH).
3. DOHC MODEL (INSPECTION OF TIMING BELT POSITION GASOLINE ENGINE MODEL)
1. Remove the timing belt cover (LH) and (RH).
2. Align the single line mark (A) on the intake camshaft pulley RH with notch (B) on the timing belt cover by turning the crank pulley.
(1) Check that the double lines (C) on the intake camshaft pulley RH and the exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned.
(2) Check that the single line the mark (D) on the exhaust camshaft pulley RH and notch (E) on the timing belt cover are aligned.
(3) Check that the single line mark (A) on the intake camshaft pulley LH and notch (B) on the timing belt cover are aligned.
(4) Check that the double lines (C) on the intake camshaft pulley LH and the exhaust camshaft pulley are aligned.
(5) Check that the single line mark (D) on the exhaust camshaft pulley LH and notch (E) on the timing belt cover are aligned.
3. If the position of camshaft pulley is out of alignment, check the problem then repair or replace as necessary.
4. DOHC MODEL (OTHER INSPECTION GASOLINE ENGINE MODEL)
1. Remove the timing belt cover (LH).
2. While cranking engine at least four rotations, check the timing belt back surface for cracks or damage. Replace the faulty timing belt as needed.
3. When the side part of timing belt (arrow direction shown in the figure) is abnormally worn (fluff or jumping out of core) or damaged, check the idlers, tensioner, water pump pulley and cam sprocket to determine idler alignment (squareness). Replace the worn or damaged timing belt.
4. Install the timing belt cover (LH).
